Drabble-Month: Day #21

lovely_ambitionShe’s a pistol and a wild-care, but Christopher Pike isn’t the best talent scout and coach for pairs skating in the United States for nothing. He’s got an eye for them and after recruiting Jim Kirk right from his proud parents, he needs to find him a partner. Nyota Uhura doesn’t work – she’s perfect and he’s raw. Christine Chapel can’t keep up with him. They go through four other women and Jim has no partner.
At least, not until now. Technically, Leah McCoy placed eighth at worlds, which means that she’s not the best, but she’s got a stubborn drive and is willing to go outside the standard drawn lines in order to perform well.
He watches her finish her triple axle and applauds as he heads down the stairs.
“Dad told me you were coming to watch me,” she calls up to him, drying down her neck with the towel she’s skated over to fetch. “Mom says you want something. What is it?”
“Just to give you a shot at Olympic gold,” Pike admits, taking the last step heavily as he leans forward and gives her a slight grin. “You in?”
“Is that a dare?”
“Come meet your new partner and find out.”
Which, really, turns into a story of its own as Pike finds out later. He just hadn’t expected this partner of Jim’s to last the shortest of all, Jim to get slapped, or to find out that apparently, they have a history.
“For once, kid,” Pike sighs, casting one minor lascivious glance at Jim’s ass in his too-tight jeans. “Can’t you just be normal?”
“Then I wouldn’t be me. And you adore me.”
“Don’t get off on it.”
