Author's Notes: Chase is serving a life sentence.
Chase is serving a life sentence for an unknown crime that he never committed.
Sometimes, that’s what he thinks about his fellowship with House. Others would kill for it, would give their lives and their careers and would do anything to be able to sit at his feet and learn from ‘the master of all things diagnostic’. Chase, though, feels as if his father’s rushed him into this life and locked the door behind him the minute he got a foot in the door.
Now he can’t get out.
Now he doesn’t even know if he wants to.
House tortures him and it’s not always in the cruelty. Some days, he’s too damn kind about something. Some days, he lavishes that praise on Chase for a theory he’s come up with on a whim and smiles that one grin he has that makes Chase feel as though the sun is shining purely on him. Then he’ll say something fond about being glad he hired Chase and it makes the previous two weeks of torture he endured worth it.
It assures that he’ll be coming back for more.
This is his life sentence and there’s no possible parole in sight. And maybe, just maybe, but Chase doesn’t mind being so confined either, so long as every once in a while, the sun shines through the bars and makes it all worth it.
