Chase is of the opinion that no one really has any truly good memories; that they're all manipulated to ease the deep pain of life's tragedies. There are no glory days, no golden period of life. There's just the crippling reality of the human condition and the human mind's futile efforts to dress it up and sugarcoat it.

Chase is just like everyone else, though and has convinced himself that it used to be better, 'in the olden days'. But it's just a happy lie and one day, the present will be a happy past.

It's just the human condition.

*

He'd swear his life to certain causes and people without even thinking on it because that's just the way he is. Once his mind is made up and his loyalty given, it's difficult to sway him, nigh impossible.

It definitely explains House (even though he's more loyal to the position than to any person) and it's better to cite Loyalty than Stockholm Syndrome.

But in the end, he's mostly loyal to himself because everyone else, well, they're going to leave him and he'll only have himself as an ally in the end So, he should just be truest to himself.

Chase doesn't have the slightest notion that what he feels for Foreman could possibly be reciprocated. It's the tiniest glimmer of adoration, respect and well, he's slightly smitten (because Foreman is…well, a catch). Chase refuses to believe is that Foreman could feel anything similar.

But Chase is wrong.

Because Foreman doesn't understand the inexplicable glimmer of respect, affection and longing he feels for Chase and he's not sure he wants to. What Foreman does know is that every time Chase smiles, really smiles, that inexplicable something grows a little more. And one day, Foreman will be able to explain it.

*

The heavy weight of epiphany and realization hit Foreman while he watches Chase dressing in his suited best and Foreman's already changed, sprawled on their bed. It doesn't hit Foreman until he watches Chase button up the jacket, that now they're together, the kind of together where you attend dinners and arrive at once and leave as one.

"Eric," Chase says over his shoulder. "Whose car are we taking?"

And Foreman sits up and just grins because maybe he's only realized how big this is, but something this important, he'll have epiphany after wonderful epiphany.

"Yours. We'll arrive in style."

Chase's scars aren't superficial and Foreman learns all too late what it's like to wound him and leave an ugly lasting scar. They're fighting about House again and it gets heated to the point that Foreman shoves Chase against the wall, the resulting sound ugly and the look on Chase's face is disbelief.

"Rob…"

He shells up quickly, no scar but the betrayal in his eyes as he brushes himself off. "We're done with this conversation," he informs Foreman.

Foreman nods and kisses Chase's temple, as if that made it better, but they both know the damage is already done.
