Author's Notes: Once upon a time in a land far, far away.

Once upon a time in a land far, far away – well, as far away as you can call New Jersey, which really isn’t so far at all. Pond-far. Hop-skip-and-jump far. But once upon a time, in a land called Jersey of New, there was a hospital by the name of Princeton Plainsboro and as with any hospital, there was the royalty – the princes and kings, the queens and the jesters.

“This land,” the king said, a king by the name of House, his own house a castle of the fanciest sort, “is my own land and no evil queen will tell me what to do!”

The queen, you see, had mandated fifteen hours of clinic work a week.

“Tyranny!” the king proclaimed.

But the evil queen was not a queen who allowed her decree to be ignored. She stood high on the balconies of the castle and proclaimed to all the land, “This King shall not reign with any of his machinations until my demands are met!”

Now, this King had many a friend as well as foe. A dapper and dashing advisor, a charming princess, a handsome knight, and a wise nobleman were all by his side. But the knight in particular was loyal to the king after the evil wizard had tested his loyalty. The knight, in this case, was being seduced by the evil queen in an attempt to betray the king.

“I’ll give you riches,” the queen promised.

The knight refused. “I shall never betray my king.”

“I’ll give you women.”

“Never shall I betray him,” the knight protested.

And so it went, on and on. Until one day, the king became aware of the evil queen’s evil scheme and had to put a stop to the evil plans. He stopped the knight before he went off on a quest to save a fair lass from the terrible Dragon of Vasculitis with his mighty sword. “Stop!” said the king. “For I know there is a terrible scheme afoot and you have betrayed me once.”

The knight stopped, guilty as he was. “My king, I have sworn you my loyalty.”

“Swear me with proof. Place your…”

“All right!” Cuddy’s voice pierced the session and several gasps went up in the air. Wilson paused, the book in his hands – which was completely blank – was held there suspended by his hand as he caught Cuddy’s gaze. “Story time is over, kids, everyone into bed for naptime and snacks!”

She stalked over to Wilson and bent down.

“Lisa, I can uh, see…”

“What were you thinking?” she hissed, righting herself and crossing her arms over her chest. Wilson was standing as well, tucking the book under his arm and holding up a twenty dollar bill. “Oh, for God’s sake…”

“I got bribed to denounce the evil queen,” Wilson said apologetically.

Cuddy just sighed. “You sold me out for twenty dollars.”

“And the promise of not bugging me for a day. I think you’d have done the same,” Wilson pointed out.

And so, the Knight and the King lived happily ever after with the help of a magical shiny potion named Sir Vicodin.

THE END
