only when he's sure his boss is gone does he settle in for the night and the extra hours of studying and working, to make sure that while everyone else thinks he's slacking away, Chase is really doing everything in his power to get ahead without looking like he's trying too hard.
*That's* how I see canon Chase - the guy who invests quite a bit of (unnecessary) effort into putting forth the appearace of "not caring" about much of anything, but deep down of course he does care. Can't stop himself. I've always seen those little mentions of articles he's read or professors who talked about this or or that old school procedure to not just be an indicator that he's read up on his dad's work but that he's quite a bit more versed in a variety of things than he lets on unless the situation needs that specific info. And the only way he'd know those trivia bits is if he's putting some time into it, somewhere. Hell, he's come up with stuff that involved neurology, naturopathy, and even immunology... not exactly a narrow purview.
