How I've learned about it via my classes about the effects of alcohol on the body, basically, the body becomes too quick in processing alcohol (as well as other drugs). It breaks down the alcohol REALLY QUICKLY, but in the process, destroys the liver, which causes the cirrhosis.

It's just a protein that's produced that breaks down the alcohol. Too much alcohol = too much protein = destroyed liver.
