Title: Doing Yourself In

Title: Doing Yourself In
Fandom: House M.D.
Pairing: House, Chase
Prompt: Fire
Word Count: 297
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: Some people have motivation and a fire beneath them. Chase has a desire to keep that motivation hidden.

There is a world of go-getters and slackers out there and the line between them is thin and perilous, like the line between safety and danger on a thawing lake of ice. Chase is an admitted slacker - by choice - and pushes his natural self away until it no longer exists but for a glimmer of an echo. His father was motivated, was on fire to make a difference in the world. And Chase wanted only one thing when he was growing up. He'd wanted to be anything but his father.

So when he works for House, he kicks back and pretends not to care. He pretends that late at night, he doesn't obsess over all the little things and what he might have done differently in order to save a life. He pretends that he doesn't have his own little fire lit under him that drives him to become just a little better. He's just like all those ducks on the pond, struggling to appear calm while calmly struggling to get somewhere else.

But Chase has the sinking suspicion that House knows just how driven he actually is beneath it all. Because House seems to know every last thing about him, whether Chase wants him to or not.

"See you tomorrow," House comments after Chase manages to resuscitate a forty-two year old man with a bad ticker. "Don't stay up too late on this one. You did good."

Chase watches House warily, and only when he's sure his boss is gone does he settle in for the night and the extra hours of studying and working, to make sure that while everyone else thinks he's slacking away, Chase is really doing everything in his power to get ahead without looking like he's trying too hard.

THE END

*That's* how I see canon Chase - the guy who invests quite a bit of (unnecessary) effort into putting forth the appearace of "not caring" about much of anything, but deep down of course he does care. Can't stop himself. I've always seen those little mentions of articles he's read or professors who talked about this or or that old school procedure to not just be an indicator that he's read up on his dad's work but that he's quite a bit more versed in a variety of things than he lets on unless the situation needs that specific info. And the only way he'd know those trivia bits is if he's putting some time into it, somewhere. Hell, he's come up with stuff that involved neurology, naturopathy, and even immunology... not exactly a narrow purview.

*nods* Such an astute observation, your last sentence there. I know the original script had Chase being 35 and more experienced, but I like the idea of him being younger and just working for it because he sees House do the same (in one of the S1 episodes).

Thank you so much for reading!

AH, GOLD. That is gold, right there. It's so good I can practically taste it. So canon. x3

so v. beautifully chase. blackcat is right in mentioning how wide chase's spectrum of knowledge is. and he only brings these obscure bits only when it's absolutely necessary-trying to keep attention off of himself. at the same time, as an intensivist, he has to have a v. good grasp of the nitty-gritty mechanics of medicine. and, as hugh laurie has said, "in a few years the show will just be called 'chase'" because we all know that chase is the house of the ducklings and that he will hang on to ppth and house with all his wombaty might. i love your fanfic100 stuff you have the right balance of fairly short pieces and longer pieces. do you mind terribly if i add you to my friends? b/c i love you more than oxygen!

The more friends, the merrier! And I really do like the hints that Chase is more than he seems, but he doesn't want other people to see how much he cares, because he seems to have defined himself as a slacker.

thanks! and yeah, chase is by far the character who, i think, has the most backstory that ought to be covered but never will, knowing the ptb.
