Martha and Djaq

“So you follow this man around the universe? Time and space, you say?” It seemed Djaq could not lose her curiosity, even as she led the woman named Martha through the forest to avoid all the alarms. “Even when he is wrong and you wish to smack him in the face?”

“Well, yeah. I mean, I love him.”

“It is never a good thing to follow a man for love. There are consequences.”

Martha kept pushing tree branches to the side, her gaze attentive to the sides for this infamous Sheriff she kept hearing about. “I get to see the span of the universe in the meantime, though. I mean, even if…even if he’s still an idiot who can only see a face for their hair colour, I get to see things invented and I get to see the future and I get to meet the most incredible people!” she spoke excitedly. “And if I have to shove his face in the fact that I love him, I’ll get him there one day.”

“And until then?”

“Haven’t you ever loved anyone?” Martha asked curiously.

Djaq paused, a hand in the air. To Martha, it might have looked as if she were waiting to see if the path was clear. To herself, it was a way to take a moment and hide a smile. “Perhaps I have. But if he doesn’t know by now, then I have no faith in any of his other inventions if he cannot see the situation before him.”

“C’mon then,” Martha encouraged, sounding wry and like she already knew that feeling all too well. “Enough talk of idiot men; I want to meet this Robin Hood!”

“I cannot promise that he is not an idiot himself, especially in the face of women.”

“Aren’t they all.”
