Revenge Gone Wrong, aka "Fucked Up Hamlet"
Act I, Scene 5
[The door opens to the roof, and ANNA wanders out, rubbing her arms and shivering a little. She catches sight of CRAIG and ALEX, who are both hovering around the edge, wrapped in blankets and chatting quietly. ANNA raises an eyebrow and slowly heads over. They don’t hear her]
CRAIG: You think we’re in for luck tonight? [almost childishly] I want to see it.
ALEX: Don’t know. I mean, it only happens once every few days now. It’s not exactly like the changing of the guard.
CRAIG: [musing to himself] Be cool if it were.
ALEX: And creepy.
CRAIG: [quickly] And creepy.
ANNA: [clears his throat] Am I interrupting something here? I could always leave you two be and you could have your campout. Do you have s’mores? Oodles of ghost stories, I bet. Oh! Maybe Mom will let you stay up extra late and you can break curfew!
CRAIG: [dryly] Isn’t she funny?
ALEX: Hilarious.
CRAIG: Should have an act.
ANNA: So what’s up?
[CRAIG and ALEX exchange a look in which both of them are clearly lost as to what they’re going to tell her. CRAIG fumbles a bit here, not sure what to do. Tell ANNA the truth, or cover for ALEX]
ALEX: I heard there’s some more meteor shower activity. I wanted to show him what he’s missing.
[Gives CRAIG a light punch in the arm with a nervous laugh. CRAIG grins full-on, almost unnervingly]
ANNA: [not believing something, but not sure what] Okay, then. Alex, the parentals are all quite worried about you. I just came by to give you due warning that you’re probably going to have [tense on this name] Richard coming around and asking questions.
ALEX: Why?
ANNA: [bluntly] They all think you’ve gone insane.
CRAIG: [aside] Wouldn’t be the first ones to think so.
ALEX: I am not insane.
ANNA: I’m sure.
ALEX: I’m not!
ANNA: Look, what is going on? I remember that not that long ago, you and I could talk about stuff. Anything. We can still talk, you know. Nothing swooped in and magically took that away.
ALEX: [hesitates] I know. I just…I’ve been a bit distracted lately.
CRAIG: [aside] Understatement.
ALEX: But I’ll be fine. [gives her a reassuring hug] But thanks, Ann.
ANNA: Are you sure?
ALEX: Sure as I can be, really.
[A faint voice begins to pick up; CRAIG looks over panicked and gets up, rushing over to ANNA]
CRAIG: Hey Anna, think maybe you could just give us some time tonight? [Lightly forcing her towards the exit] You know, guy’s time to just talk about sports, and which beer is water, and how often we you know, get off on things…
ANNA: [Deadpan] Alex talks about those things?
CRAIG: Please?
ANNA: [nodding] You have my permission.
[ANNA exits just as NICHOLAS slowly drifts on]
NICHOLAS: I told you I would return.
ALEX: Why?
NICHOLAS: You cannot rest until I am at rest.
CRAIG: So go to sleep.
NICHOLAS: [disdainfully] Who is this?
ALEX: He’s in the picture now. Deal. Look, if…IF I do what you want me to do, avenge this death or help you to rest in peace, or whatever, will you finally leave me alone?
NICHOLAS: All I ask is peace of mind.
ALEX: Then I will do the best that I can.
[CRAIG quickly looks between both of them confused, boggled by what ALEX is saying. Quick rapid head movements for every word spoken between them]
NICHOLAS: Excellent.
ALEX: Good.
NICHOLAS: You won’t regret it.
ALEX: No, because then you’ll leave me alone.
NICHOLAS: Only when I can rest.
[NICHOLAS drifts away, leaving a bewildered CRAIG]
CRAIG: Tell me, agreed to take part in any insane murder plots lately sparked by ghosts?
ALEX: [hurrying to get inside] I agree, he leaves me alone until I can figure out how to get rid of him, or…exorcise him…whatever the hell you do with a ghost.
CRAIG: Oh! I get it. Smart!
ALEX: I’ve been known to be. [Exits the roof]
CRAIG: [gazing out to the audience] Rest, rest, perturbed spirit. [Dawning moment of realization] Oh my god, oh…my god. I get it now. I totally remember! I remembered the line! Dude, I’ve got to call Anna. [Runs off the stage]
